IKEA places first in the Sustainable Cotton Ranking

IKEA und vier weitere Unternehmen (Tchibo, C&A, Marks and Spencer und Hennes & Mauritz) erhielten die Marke «Leading the way», 8 Unternehmen sind «Well on the way», 18 sind «Starting the journey» und 44 Unternehmen wurden mit «Not yet started» eingestuft.

12 years of better cotton
IKEA has been working towards a more sustainable cotton sourcing for a long time now, which is why we are all the more pleased to be leading the way as a good example across the world. In 2005, we launched the “Better Cotton” initiative with WWF, which aims to establish new standards in cotton cultivation and make the process more sustainable for people and the environment. One of Better Cotton’s core missions is to train and educate cotton farmers in more sustainable production methods, which can also increase their profits and improve their working conditions. Two years ago, we reached an important milestone: all the cotton we use for our products has been sourced from more sustainable cultivation since 2015.

Next step: “Water positive”
IKEA is now setting new standards to improve cotton production even more. The specific goal here is to operate up to 100% “water positively” by 2020. For us, this means using water as efficiently as possible and supporting responsible handling of water as a resource throughout our company and beyond. Our mission also focuses on cotton as its production requires a lot of water. In order to change this, we are training farmers in using water more efficiently and also setting up water usage associations in the regions. This allows cotton to be cultivated using less water so that more water is available for other purposes.

Achieving first place in the Sustainable Cotton Ranking 2017 shows that our dedication has been worthwhile and we are able to make a great impact. At the same time, we promise to continue our commitment to the People & Planet strategy.
